October 3, 2006 – 1:26 pm

The lexicon of life is always changing and on the internet the lexicon changes even faster.

Making sure your keywords are relevant is extremely important on the internet. If your keyword model is outdated, it isn’t hard to understand why you have might lower traffic levels, no one is looking for them!

I’ll use an example of some things that were once players in the game, but have been forgotten about in todays world.

  • Atari 2600
  • Rotary Phones
  • Woolworth Company
  • AMC Autos
  • Beta VCR’s
  • 28.8 computer modem
  • Polaroid Instant Cameras

All of the items or companies listed above are no longer pertinent, no matter how popular they may have been 10, 15 or even 30 years ago.

There are a number of tools you can use to see if your keyword choices are hot or not.

  • Overture is free. The results displayed are based on data collected 2 months prior.
  • Google Trends is another free service, but it doesn’t provide numbers to gauge the volume of search on terms.
  • Wordtracker is a paid service that you can you can pay for by the day, the week, the month or the year.
  • Overture and Wordtracker both give other keyword suggestions that are related to the terms you entered. These valuable tools can be a useful guide before writing your next content page.

Where there’s heat, there’s fire! Picking the correct keywords can make an impact on whether or not your webpage is successful, so be sure to choose them wisely!
