Canada To Discontinue Print Edition Of The TV Guide

October 26, 2006 – 7:27 am

You know that the internet is changing the way business is being done when the TV Guide in Canada has decided to discontinue the print edition of their magazine after 50 years. Over the last four years their readership has suffered a swift decline, going from 430,000 to 243,000.

“The way the universe — and let’s be honest — a younger universe is getting their information — has changed dramatically in the last five years, never mind 30 years ago,” said Jaimie Hubbard, editor of Canada’s TV Guide.

I also imagine that the introduction of satellite TV and extended cable offerings didn’t help their cause. Reporting on a handful of television broadcasters 30 years ago isn’t the same as trying to cover the thousands of channels available today.

Canadians will be able to access TV listings online only at no charge. The service will be paid for by advertisers.

This change doesn’t affect the publication in other countries or markets, or at least not yet.

What are your thoughts on this change? Do you think it’s a sign of things to come for more offline publications?
