Did The Internet Kill The Video Star?
September 6, 2006 – 9:44 amI remember when MTV was still new and exciting and cable television was the newest rage. Rabbit ears and home antenna towers were abandoned in favor of a box that sat on top of your TV and a remote control.

I’m beginning to wonder if the internet is killing the video star in the same way MTV killed the radio star?
The VMA’s (Video Music Awards) a staple in MTV’s programming lineup saw a decline in viewership for this years award show. The show was hosted in New York instead of Miami, Florida as in past years because of declining eyeballs.
Management at the company is also shifting on the news that co-founder Tom Freston has stepped down after 20 years in the company.
It also stands to reason that websites like Youtube.com that serves up videos on demand (as made available by user contributed material) can have an edge over programming that is inundated with advertising, and a lot of times not even about serving up videos. As artists videos are made more available on the internet, there’s less reason to flip on MTV networks to wait for them to be played.. unless of course there’s a breaking video that needs to be recorded to upload to Youtube.com
What are your thoughts.. did the internet kill the video stars on MTV?
