Google Conspiracy Theories

April 13, 2007 – 2:17 pm

If you listen to webmasters for any length of time, you’re bound to hear some horror stories about how Google has mis-treated their websites. You may even learn of the latest conspiracy theory about how Google is screwing up their results as part of a plan for world domination. But rest assured, none of this is important in the long term.

When you start thinking of Google conspiracy theories that explain why your website is not performing well, then you may have already lost the game. Google doesn’t control the entire internet, it just seems like it at time. There are a number of other effective ways to get traffic to your website, although the Big G clearly is the most important. But you can’t start considering that they’re out to get you.

Now maybe Google really does hate you and your website and they’re out to get you. That still won’t necessarily preclude you from being a success. Sure, it would make things harder, but you’re giving way too much power to a third party. You can still effect a positive outcome, you just have to work harder.

I still listen to whatever theories expounded, no matter how crazy. I figure, at the very least, it’s likely that I might glean some kind of insight into people’s thought processes, if nothing else. But I don’t spend too much time dwelling on the negativity, because that will end up killing my productivity in the long run.
