Google Makes Move To Buy Wireless Airwaves

July 20, 2007 – 8:09 pm

Not one to let grass grow underfoot, Google recently announced plans to make a bid on on wireless airwaves being auctioned off by the Federal Government. They are planning on offering 4.6 billion dollars on these airwaves, provided the Government meets certain conditions.

In short, they want the Government to offer a certain portion of the airwaves to other companies seeking to offer high-speed Internet and other services from the winning bidder.

Google is very interested in the prospects of wireless wholesalers and the spectrum being auctioned is considered to be very valuable because it reaches long distances and is optimal for high speed internet access from mobile phones. This part of the spectrum also can easily penetrate walls and other obstructions.

The auction could raise as much as 20 billion dollars for the US Treasury.

Other companies expected to bid for control of these long range wireless airwaves is Verizon and
AT&T.

The auction is to take place before January 28, 2008.

Do you think that Google stands a chance in acquiring a position in the wireless world and is it any of their business?
