Interstitial Ads Are Obnoxious, And Don’t Tell Me It’s A “Welcome Screen”

January 23, 2008 – 4:25 pm

I love web ads. Let’s get that right out of the way. I’m not a person who hates the idea of advertising on a website. In fact, if it wasn’t for web ads, I’d be in deep doggy doo doo when it comes to paying the bills. But there are a few types of ads that I just can’t get with. One of them is the “Interstitial Ad” that “stops all the action on your screen” until you take some sort of action.

Thanks for the warm welcome, Forbes

At Forbes the interstitial just appears out of nowhere, devouring you entire display. That part is bad enough, but what is truly appalling is the fact they call it a “welcome screen.” I’m pretty sure they’re more interested in monetizing my visit then “welcoming” me back to the website.

A company like Forbes can get away with this tactic. But only because they truly have content that the average surfer wants to see. But if you couple interstitial ads with low quality content pages, what do you have then?

All in all, I think Interstitial ads are one of the worst formats available.
