Link Building For 2007 - Safety First
May 2, 2007 – 2:59 pmIncoming (and outgoing) links have always been integral to Google’s link popularity based search engine ranking system. But the way links are gathered has come under fire in recent years, as one by one, Google has dismantled link schemes that “used to work”, exposing certain business models to sudden doom. Now, linkage is under fire again, and it’s time to examine what methods remain effective.
Effective links are ones that don’t violate guidelines
Google is fairly clear about what links they link in their Webmaster Guidelines. In essence, they tell you that submitting to hand-edited directories is a good thing, and the one thing you need to watch out for is:
Don’t participate in link schemes designed to increase your site’s ranking or PageRank. In particular, avoid links to web spammers or “bad neighborhoods” on the web, as your own ranking may be affected adversely by those links.
It seems simple enough, and has been a guiding principle for the company for years. I decided that the easiest way to make sure I didn’t involve myself with any link schemes designed to manipulate PR is to removed the damn toolbar from my computer. That way, I can’t even be tempted to concern myself with such lowly efforts of manipulation.
If Google was serious about avoiding manipulation, they too would remove the Toolbar from everyone’s sight.
