Mackinac Bridge Closed Due To High Winds

February 10, 2008 – 5:03 pm

Mackinac Island is getting quite a winter punch with high winds and low visibility. It was recently announced that the 5 mile Mackinac Island Bridge has been closed due to treacherous driving conditions with whiteouts and high gusty winds.

Other events such as church services and outdoor events were canceled as a result of the bad weather.

William Marino, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Grand Rapids said “The road conditions are just terrible. There’s been slide-offs all over and the roads are very icy.”

A sheriff deputy said that many of Cass County’s secondary roads are impassable and have snow drifts.

So if you’re in Michigan, stay put if you can and check to be sure that any planned events haven’t been canceled before venturing outdoors. If you do leave, be sure to bundle up and wear layers to protect yourself against the cold and wind.
