More No-Nos From Google Adsense Group

May 3, 2007 – 3:44 pm

The first rule of Adsense Club is: you do not induce visitors to click! The second rule of Adsense Club is always follow rule one. Today Google is being a bit more clear in their explanation in a post entitled don’t run the risk of click and miss, which is sort of lyrical if you sing it in just the right key.

Definite No-Nos:

- In close proximity to Macromedia Flash games
- Under pop-ups or download prompts
- Near site navigation controls on your pages, such as drop-downs or menu links

And in case you’re a blockhead that’s still feigning ignorance, please read the following about what exactly is meant:

Generally, we ask that you not place your ads near features of your site that your users may interact with by clicking. If your site contains elements that increase the number of ad clicks without increasing business results for the advertiser, we may consider these clicks to be invalid. “Business results” can range from an online sale to a page view. If we detect enough of these clicks and determine that the risk to our advertisers is too great, we may disable the account. To maintain compliance with our program policies and ensure that your users don’t inadvertently click on the ads on your site, we strongly recommend that you move any ad units that are in close proximity to interactive site features.

That’s it! Seems simple enough. Do not drop people down a “click hole”. Don’t “bump them” into anything. Leave enough room for everything to breathe. And if you feel like it, you can even make sure your ads are tastefully blended in. It’s better for everyone in the long run when you do.
