MySpace To Issue Amber Alerts

January 23, 2007 – 5:06 pm

Today MySpace announced that they are going to help protect missing children. Starting Tuesday whenever an Amber Alert is issued all MySpace users in the area code the child/children went missing in will get an alert at their profile page.

This is being done through an agreement between News Corp. (MySpace’s parent company) and National Center for Missing & Exploited Children.

This alert will appear in the top of user’s profile. Members can then click on the alert to find out more details about the missing child/children.

MySpace is implementing a number of other security features like requiring a valid Email address to sign up, offering software that can prohibit adults from talking to users 14-18, and are working on software that parents can access their children’s usernames, ages and locations they use in their personal profile pages.

I think this is a good way to be a responsible net-neighbor. What say you?

Its a good idea if they can keep the security at a maintanable level.
