Strategic Internet Marketing - What’s The Best Approach?

July 21, 2007 – 10:21 am

Strategic internet marketing is more of an art than a science. There are numerous factors that will determine whether or not your online marketing efforts will hit their target and get you the results that you’re looking for.

Strategic internet marketing will also depend on how your business is set up. For instance, if you have a “bricks and mortar” business that has an online presence you might be trying to drive people into your actual store over trying to get them to order products or services over the internet. In other cases, you might just be trying to stimulate additional sales from potential customers that aren’t close enough to pay a visit to your store.

Whatever your business model might be, I’m going to suggest some tips for a successful strategic internet marketing plan.

1. Find local or relevant places that offer affordable ad placement. For instance if you are offering crystals or metaphysical products, look for other websites that have demographics
that cater to people that are interested in what you have to offer. If you have a local store that you’re trying to advertise, look for websites in the same geographical area as you are and see if they have advertising space available for sale. Most website owners are happy to sell a banner or a text ad, especially if it’s done in good taste.

2. Offer a coupon or special offer. Once you have advertising set in place, offer a coupon or special offer that you can track. This sort of advertising will help you determine what ads are working and the return on investment of your ad spend. This can be a coupon code (necessary if you are trying to primarily track online sales) or a print friendly coupon that a customer can bring into your physical location. This type of advertising is a great incentive for people to buy from you on more than one occasion.

3. Get customers to sign up for a mailing list. People love to stay abreast of new product offerings and any other special offers you might have. (Of course, you’ll want to be sure that your mailers are opt-in compliant and an opt-out is readily available to avoid problems with your webhost.) A good example would be a florist that reminds customers about upcoming holidays that flowers are appropriate or offers a discount for corsages during prom time. Keeping in touch with customers is one way to get them to come back again and again. It’s also a great way to announce any other special events you might have planned in the future.

Strategic internet marketing coupled with excellent customer service after the sale is a sure fire way to boost your bottom line, no matter what your business model is. Always remember to under promise and over deliver for the best results in sales!

I hope that these tips will help you catapult your business to the next level.
