Street View Of Military Installations Prohibited
March 7, 2008 – 12:36 pmThe Pentagon recently announced the ban of Google’s Street View on Military operations after finding detailed photos of Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, Texas on the internet.
Gary Ross, spokesperson for the U.S. Northern Command said:
“We don’t have any issues regarding Google and their products but the Street View provides clear imagery of control points, barriers, headquarters and security facilities that pose a risk to our force-protection efforts.”
Google has since removed these photographs, but regular Street View options remain available
for a number of cities and metropolitan areas. Google sends out cars equipped with a camera on top to take the photos and then publishes them online.
I can see where the Government was legitimately concerned about these sensitive photos. Sometimes you really have to wonder if the guys at Google are really the smartest people in the world?
