The Real Problem With Multilevel Marketing
Multi-level marketing has had explosive growth over the past few years, but like any business venture, this method has both pros and cons.
Today we’ll look a little further into multi-level marketing and what it’s all about.
One common question that people have about a multi-level business is, What’s the problem with a multilevel business?
Before entering into this type of business, you’ll want to do some investigation about the multilevel business. Is it a pyramid structure? Pyramid structures offer tiered compensation, meaning that sellers earn commission while sales manager earns bonuses and potentially more commissions based on the sales of their underlings.
Entrepreneurs will want to beware of illegal pyramids and other scams. In these types of pyramid schemes, money comes from affiliates but little or no product is delivered to the consumer. Despite any perception that you may have, Amway, Herbalife, TNI, Agel and other affiliate style programs have sold millions and millions of products to satisfied customers, without a distributor, so they are still effective at Multilevel marketing tactics.
Membership or a start up cost is sometimes required to participate in selling products or services through major multilevel distributors, but this cost is significantly less that opening up a franchise restaurant or other bricks and mortar style businesses.
Another problem with a multilevel marketing business is not in the multilevel itself, but some of the people that are attracted to this style of business don’t have the motivation to make their multilevel business successful. It could take months or even a year to build a profitable customer base and recruit other salespeople underneath them. Known as “micro-franchising,” this method of sales offers lower pay in the early stages, but has the potential for exceptional profits as it grows. Those without patience and drive are likely to be turned off to the idea of the amount of work it takes to become successful.
The most notable things that make a multilevel business unattractive to people are:
• Little or no success in their business or profession with very little money saved to invest.
• Business inexperience.
• Little or no experience in sales.
• Troubles developing relationships with employees, business partners or making outside contacts.
• Dissatisfaction with current income levels.
• Unrealistic expectations of how much work is needed in comparison with hard earned income.
This isn’t to say that multilevel businesses are wrong or bad, it’s just an outline of things that a multilevel marketer should consider before
starting a new venture.
For those that don’t have the temperament for this type of business, they might find themselves doing the following:
• Continually trying to “sell” the opportunity
• Inappropriate discussions in social situations
• Getting depressed or expressing regret for becoming involved with the program.
• Abandoning existing distributors to help or take care of new ones.
• Bringing up the business at inappropriate times or expressing disappointment when talking about the business with friends, family or other associates.
This, of course, isn’t applicable to all dealers, but this can tarnish the reputation of everyone else involved in the multilevel business.
What a successful multilevel marketer must keep in mind is that there’s always a first time for everything. A multilevel business is a fantastic opportunity for a first time business person. High points such as the first sale, meeting sales goals and earning profits are proper motivators.
Take multilevel business for what it is. It’s a business and you are the owner. Like any other business, you’re not the landlord until you purchase a property and rent or lease it to a tenant. You aren’t a successful salesperson until you’ve worked with distributors and sell your product to a consumer. No matter what endeavor you decide to go into you’ll need to learn the tricks of the trade.
Affiliates that are serious about building a large multilevel business should read and learn about business fundamentals, the latest marketing techniques and sales strategies to assure their ultimate success.
