Will People Start Skipping Google Search?

June 11, 2007 – 11:43 am

Over the weekend I spent some time looking for information on a number of different topics and a couple of websites came up repeatedly in Google’s results.

Wikipedia.org and About.com came up the big winners.

I’m not saying that these websites are bad, but seeing them come up over and over in Google is a good enough reason to “skip” Google altogether and just type the website in my address bar to search from there.

I know that search engine rankings are dependent on a number of factors. Links and content being the most important (in my humble opinion.)

Both Wiki and About.com have authority status for having lots of content and sufficient links to their pages, but they can’t always be the website you’re looking for, unless you need a long page made with user contributed information (that isn’t always accurate) or a brief page with hundreds of paid advertising links.

I’m wondering if more people might also consider “skipping” Google if users can just bookmark or type in Wiki’s address and directly search at their website.

What are your thoughts? Do you think Google will lose searchers if they keep finding the same results in Google’s index?
