Your Niche’s Popularity Determines Your Website’s Potential

April 18, 2007 – 1:44 pm

Everyone always tells new internet marketers to “pick a niche”, and it’s great advice. But you have to consider some additional advice, like, pick a niche that is actually popular, or you’re in for some low-traffic numbers. When you invest in stocks, you’re always taught that the stocks strength is a combination of the sector and the company strength. You can think the same way for your website. Traffic potential comes from how popular the sector is, and how popular your website is.

Finding a low-competition high-traffic niche is nearly impossible. A few years ago you may have had a chance, but now you can forget it. Professionals have been crawling over every keyword category in order to monetize them, and most of the low-hanging fruit has long ago been picked up. This is no reason to despair, though.

My advice is to enter a high-traffic, high-competition niche. This should accomplish two things for you. 1) You’ll learn to compete against the best and 2) you’ll actually make money when your website gets traffic. The reason the competition is so great, is because profits are so high.
